![]() Buck fortuitously arrives just as Covenant reinforcements attempt to secure the complex, and with his help Dare and the Rookie escort Vergil safely to the surface through heavy resistance. Quick to Adjust has assimilated the Superintendent's data with its own knowledge, particularly the Superintendent's Vergil subroutine, making it an extremely valuable defector to the UNSC and a major liability for the Covenant. The two then fight through a Drone hive to the Superintendent's core to secure its data as well as "the asset," revealed to a rogue Huragok named Quick to Adjust that has taken refuge there. Once the Rookie and Dare are reunited, Dare informs the Rookie of the true nature of their mission. He follows the Rookie until he is killed by either the Drones or the Rookie (Depending on the number of audio logs found). During this time, the Rookie runs into an NMPD Officer searching for his men. On the way down, the Rookie has to defeat a range of Covenant, including Brutes and Drones. He arrives at sub-level 7 of the complex and must fight his way down to sub-level 9, where Dare is hiding. Additionally, after the officer informs the Rookie of Kinsler's instructions, the Superintendent says: "CAUTION, TRAVELER! CAUTION!", warning the Rookie of the officer's imminent betrayal. The Rookie, having found Dare's distress signal after exploring the city, descends down an underground elevator shaft into the Superintendent's Data Center. When the officer informs the Rookie that he will be accompanying him, the Superintendent says: "WARNING! HITCHIKERS MAY BE ESCAPED CONVICTS!" Which also happens to be a reference to both Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo: 2. In addition to the Superintendent's "CRIME DOESN'T PAY" remark, the Superintendent also attempts to warn the Rookie in other ways.Since the officer is invincible, the player could exploit that and hang back while making said officer takes on the Covenant on his own (definitely recommended on higher difficulties). In the Spanish language edition of the game, the officer is voiced by Dave Wittenberg, the same person who voiced Mike Branley, making the storyline confusing to an unaware player. The officer will then simply vanish after standing still for a few seconds. Instead, the Drones simply appear and flee. Using Theater to watch the officer's death at the hands of the Drones will reveal that the Drones don't actually attack him.He is also invincible until his scripted death or when he attacks the player. The officer is immune to headshots and his shotgun can not be traded. He is the first human enemy in any Halo game, excluding the AWOL Marine from Halo: Combat Evolved, who the player is not required to kill, and the marines in the Sacred Icon level in Halo 2, who cannot be reached without using The Sputnik skull and thus are not encountered as actual enemies in-game.However, the officer's actions were little more than a fatal mistake, and the better equipped and trained Rookie easily killed him in self-defense, prompting the Superintendent to note that "CRIME DOESN'T PAY. He stated that the Rookie could not be allowed to live, and quickly attacked the ODST. The corrupt policeman, caught red-handed, told the Rookie of his goal. Upon reaching a frozen section of the Data Center, the officer ordered the Rookie to wait outside a room as he needed to check on a "personnel issue." The Rookie followed him, however, and saw that he was inspecting Daniel Endesha's corpse. The Rookie's arrival, however, allowed the officer to progress further into the facility. He was unable to complete the mission the Superintendent didn't trust him, so it locked all of the data stacks and some of the doors. The officer's objectives were to confirm Daniel Endesha's death at the hands of Kinsler, to kill the Huragok inside of the Superintendent's core, and to retrieve the AI's core data. Most of the team was killed on the way down the officer was the only team member remaining when a rookie Orbital Drop Shock Trooper encountered him on Sublevel 07. Some time after the Covenant invasion of Earth, Kinsler sent the officer and his team into the Superintendent's Data Center.
